• Technology licensing company WiLAN has settled all patent litigation with UTStarcom. Terms of the settlement were not released. On June 19, 2008, WiLAN initiated litigation in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against a number of major handset suppliers over alleged patent infringement. To date, settlements have been reached with companies including Research In Motion, Nokia, Samsung and UTStarcom. LG, Motorola and PCD are still fighting the allegations.

Motorola says its iDEN network has reached 10 million subscribers outside the United States. Motorola's proprietary iDEN technology is currently in operation with more than 30 network operators in 23 countries worldwide for the delivery of communications services, including push-to-talk.

Chetan Sharma Consulting released a report showing the U.S. wireless data market grew 6 percent quarter-over-quarter and 22 percent year-over-year, to exceed $13.2 billion in mobile data service revenues in the second quarter of 2010. That's on track to meet the firm's initial estimate of $54 billion for the year. Verizon Wireless maintained its No. 1 ranking for the first half of 2010 in terms of the operator with the most mobile data revenues; it had surpassed NTT DoCoMo in the prior quarter for the first time.

Qualcomm, together with Vivo, Instituto Ambiental Brasil Sustentavel, the United States Agency for International Development, ZTE Brazil and the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabralia has launched the Fishing with 3G Nets project. The project aims to foster economic development and increase public safety by promoting digital and social inclusion for isolated fishermen and mariculture (oyster) cultivators. The project, organized through Qualcomm's Wireless Reach initiative, comes at a time when the fishermen of Santa Cruz Cabralia need to modernize their operations and institutionalize sustainable fishing tactics.

Digby has launched a software platform to help retailers launch mobile commerce offerings. The platform integrates social media, multiple product views, video demonstrations, barcode scanning, promotions and breadcrumb navigation. Digby recently added clothing retailer Lilly Pulitzer as a client for the new platform, which is expected to add new features and partners in the coming weeks.

Maravedis and Tonse Telecom report India's 4G subscriber base will reach 33 million in 2015 and its 4G infrastructure market will reach an accumulated $1.5 billion in the next five years. The research firms believe device and data bundles will become the norm in the Indian market.

Skyworks Solutions says Samsung is using its technology in its newest femtocell offering, including Verizon's Network Extender. Skyworks femtocell solutions include dual band transceiver chipsets that require a minimal number of external components to complete a CDMA radio subsystem for femtocell applications.

Dell'Oro Group says femtocell sales will reach $4 billion in 2014 as commercial deployments ramp up over the next couple years. While the research firm expects just one million units to ship this year, 62 million femtocells are predicted to ship in 2014, with more than 80 percent of those total units being WCDMA femtocells.
