T-Mobile USA today launched a page on its website where customers can register to receive e-mail updates on a new HSPA+ capable smartphone called the G2. The G2 is the successor to the "world's first Android-powered phone," the G1, which launched nearly two years ago and was produced by HTC.

According to the preview page, the "T-Mobile G2 will deliver tight integration with Google services and break new ground as the first smartphone designed to run at 4G speeds on our new HSPA+ network."

The company promises to share more details about the G2 in coming weeks and offer exclusive first access to current T-Mobile customers.

Over the past year, T-Mobile has been aggressively pursuing deployment of its HSPA+ network. At the end of July this year, the carrier announced that it had expanded its HSPA+ network in almost 50 markets, covering more than 85 million Americans.

While HSPA+ is not technically a 4G cellular network, its projected evolution keeps in step those speeds projected for WiMAX and LTE.
