• AT&T has selected Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, and Juniper Networks as its domain suppliers for the IP/MPLS/Ethernet/Evolved Packet Core equipment needed for its LTE network. The multi-year selection covers equipment used to route and forward IP packet traffic (voice, video, and data) through AT&T's network. Financial terms of the agreements with the suppliers were not disclosed.
• Motorola's enterprise mobility segment has landed a contract to build out a public safety wireless broadband network in the San Francisco Bay Area on the 700 MHz band, where Motorola will deploy an LTE network. The system will be installed this year and is expected to be operational in early 2011. The first phase includes an LTE core, 10 sites and 330 Motorola Public Safety LTE user modems to provide Bay Area responders with access to a host of apps for increased public safety information sharing. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
• Verizon Wireless and Samsung announced that the Samsung Intensity II is available online today and in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the coming weeks. Made partly from recycled plastic, Intensity II boasts a horizontal slide-out qwerty keyboard, a music player, one-touch access to social networking sites and a 1.3-megapixel infrared camera with night vision.
• Sierra Wireless, the maker of Sprint's Overdrive personal hot spot, lost $3.5 million from ongoing operations in the second quarter despite an 18 percent increase in sales over last year, which hit $159.1 million. Sales were driven mainly by the company's machine to machine business, although mobile computing revenue increased sequentially.
• McAfee has entered into an agreement to acquire tenCube, the provider of the WaveSecure mobile security service. McAfee will add WaveSecure's locate, lock, back-up and wipe technology to Trust Digital's enterprise mobility management and McAfee's mobile security technology.
• Redknee Solutions, a provider of software and services for communications companies, plans to acquire Nimbus Systems in a deal that is expected to close by the end of September. The acquisition of Nimbus Systems will strengthen Redknee's position with operators including Telefonica, Orange and Vodafone, while providing opportunities to expand into Latin America.
