• Cross platform app store GetJar has announced the winners of the Gettie Awards, which honor the best applications across all major platforms. Winners included WaveSecure Backup, Nimbuzz, Opera Mini, Kayak Flight/Hotel Search, Tap Tap Revenge 3, Lookout and Layar. Of the apps submitted to the 2010 Getties, iPhone accounted for 26 percent of nominations, Android 20 percent, Java 18 percent, Symbian 15 percent, Blackberry 13 percent and Windows Mobile 9 percent.
• Mobile ad network InMobi says it has raised $8 million in a Series B funding round from its existing investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sherpalo Ventures. The company will use the money to expand its U.S. presence, launch in Japan and existing operations in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Africa. The company also will double its engineering staff.
• Mobile banking company Monitise is raising 32.4 million pounds, or $48.7 million, through stock sales and subscriptions. It also deepened its relationship with Visa and existing shareholder First Eastern. The company is going to use the money to expand its presence in India and the Asia-Pacific region.
• Consumer Cellular has extended its relationship with the AARP and will remain the exclusive wireless provider for the organization's members through at least August 2011. Consumer Cellular's rates start at $10 per month for AARP customers, who also get a five percent discount off monthly fees and charges, as well as a 30 percent discount on select accessories.
• MobiTV says Joanne Waage has been promoted to vice president, strategic media partnerships and programming, effective immediately. In her five years at MobiTV, Waage has grown the company's mobile media footprint to include more than 50 partnerships and over 100 channels of top tier content. She will now be responsible for working closely with product development to continue to expand and define the mobile television market.
• The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) announced the election of Nidhish Parikh, director of Personal Media Industry Collaboration for Nokia, as chairman of the DLNA Board of Directors and president of DLNA. The Alliance also announced the election of Bob Brummer, senior director at Microsoft, as vice chairman and vice president of DLNA. Peter Kaars, director of Standards North America for Technicolor, was named as a standing director. The newly elected board members join company representatives from AwoX, Broadcom, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. They are chartered with overseeing the development of standards that allow for the sharing of content across devices, regardless of manufacturer.
• ChaCha has hired Sara Camden for the newly created position of senior marketing and communications manager. She will be based in the company's Indianapolis headquarters and report to Cat Enagonio, ChaCha's vice president of Marketing and Client Care.
