App Identifies Healthier Food Choices

The company behind the Shop to Lose iPhone app is at it again. This time, the company is launching Eat This?, not to be confused with the Eat This, Not That! book.

Eat This? is an interactive app whereby users can type in their pre-existing condition, like diabetes or high blood pressure, and get immediate feedback on whether specific foods are good or bad. Creation of the app was accelerated based on user feedback – consumers were asking if there was a simple application that would tell them whether the item in their hand was something they should eat or not, explains Charlie Koo, CEO and chairman of Evincii, the Mountain View, Calif., company behind the PICKKA-branded apps.

The Eat This app involves reading the bar code on food items and it returns a verdict in the form of a red animated shaking head icon if a food is a poor choice, along with calorie and nutrition information. If it's a good choice for the consumer, the shopper sees a smiley face and "OK Choice" next to a color-coded scale. The app also provides consumer reviews of food products and suggests alternatives if there's a better one.

The company also announced enhancements for its Shop to Lose application and 3G iPad compatibility. The Shop to Lose app guides dieters to healthy foods in the grocery aisle.

Enhancements to Shop to Lose include ratings of restaurant menu items and expanded restaurant coverage. The iPad Wi-Fi and 3G models also offer a different kind of experience, so health professionals, for example, can more easily share nutrition and weight loss guidance with others. As Koo points out, it's easier to share information on an iPad than an iPhone.

The Shop to Lose Restaurant Health Meter now covers more than 80,000 restaurants at more than 430 chains.

Next up on the company's roster is adding Android support for its apps.
