YouMail, provider of digital secretary services for managing mobile voicemail, today announced the general release of an open API for developers.
The YouMail open API will allow developers to create YouMail accounts that provide visual voicemail services, voice-to-text transcription services with routing via email or mobile texting and "drop box" services that reroute voice messages from general inboxes to individuals or groups.
"We're excited to see the creative approaches developers are taking to bring YouMail functionality to their user communities," said Alex Quilici, YouMail's CEO. "We used the API ourselves to build our iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android applications so it has been well-tested and proven to be robust and very easy to use."
Quilici said that a company called Syntactix used the beta version of the API to develop YouView, a visual voicemail application for the Palm Pre. Another application that employs the API comes from Loopback Communications, which provides follow-up to patients that have been recently discharged from the hospital. The app helps hospital staff to identify patients that may need additional help and collect patient satisfaction data regarding their hospital visit.
YouMail, which started in 2007, recently announced that it has more than 1 million registered users. The company offers free applications for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry platforms, as well as a paid application for Palm's webOS platform.
