RIM Kicks Off WES

Research In Motion (RIM) today kicked off its annual WES BlackBerry conference in Orlando, Fla., with RIM President and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis keeping specifics about the company's new operating system, BlackBerry OS 6.0, to a minimum. Aside from a short video presentation, attendees learned little more than what the new OS will look like, according to a live blog from Engadget.

RIM kicked of the show's general session with an official unveiling of a white BlackBerry Bold 9700, the new BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Pearl 3G. The device unveilings were a prelude to a flashy video demonstration of BlackBerry OS 6.0 and its touch-based UI.

After that, the company focused almost entirely on enterprise applications, with visits to the stage by executives from HP and Oracle, as well as Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

HP demonstrated its mobile printing application, which allows BlackBerry users to print from anywhere using their phones, and Oracle demonstrated a medical application.

Lazaridis told analysts yesterday at the Capital Markets Program that RIM would launch the new BlackBerry OS in the third quarter of 2010. According to Lazaridis, RIM has 41 million BlackBerry users to date, and the company has sold 90 million BlackBerries worldwide since it started selling the devices.
