No Delay on Verizon's Droid Update

A couple of reports around the Web have surfaced today claiming that Verizon Wireless' plans to deliver an OTA firmware update to Android 2.1 have been delayed. But apparently an event cannot be delayed when there's no confirmed date as of yet.

According to Tom Pica, a Verizon Wireless spokesman, the update is actually going along as planned.

"There was no delay," he said. "The Android 2.1 upgrade for the Droid by Motorola was deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users as scheduled this past week. It is expected the broader phased rollout to all Droid by Motorola users will take place, but not just yet. No date scheduled. We will keep you posted. We will issue no upgrade before it's time."

The new update, when it comes, will bring to the Droid most of the enhancements originally seen when Google launched the Nexus One. The Droid will now get multi-touch pinch-to-zoom within the browser, Google maps and Gallery, as well as an update to Google maps overall. Additionally, the update brings with it a new weather and news application, voice-to-text input and live animated wallpapers.

While the Droid remains a Verizon Wireless exclusive, Google has just announced availability of Sprint and AT&T-compatible versions of the Nexus One, making that device the most widely available of any Android smartphone.

Like a lot of folks, I’ve been wondering how companies in the LBS space will react now that Google is offering Google Maps Navigation as a free feature on Android devices. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, I got a little closer.
