Netflix has been looking for a shot of something to reinvigorate its business, as the company's through-the-mail strategy has struggled to compete with the growing number of on-demand video services out there. Yesterday's demo at Microsoft's MIX10 of a prototype streaming video app for Windows Phone 7 series devices might just prove to be that "something."
The new application, which is powered by Microsoft's Silverlight media software, would link to the company's "Watch Instantly" service, which currently provides users with online access and viewing of Netflix titles.
A streaming Netflix service hasn't been announced for the forthcoming Apple iPad and many are saying the service, which relies heavily on hard copy DVDs, is quickly becoming dated, as consumers choose to download movies from outlets like iTunes or from their cable provider.
