AT&T to Allow SlingPlayer over 3G

AT&T will finally allow iPhone users to stream video through a new version of the SlingPlayer mobile app. The app, which was revised by Sling Media to make efficient use of 3G network bandwidth, has been tested by AT&T, and AT&T has recently notified Sling Media and Apple that the optimized app can run on its 3G network.

"Key for us is Sling Media was willing to work with us to revise the app to make it more bandwidth sensitive. They made important changes to more efficiently use 3G network bandwidth and conserve wireless spectrum so that  we were able to support the app on our 3G mobile broadband network," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of  AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, in a press release.

AT&T said it has been testing the app since mid-December. The 3G version of the app will still have to get approval from the App Store before it becomes available to consumers. The SlingPlayer mobile app already is available for use today on AT&T's Wi-Fi network.

The SlingPlayer mobile app is a complement to Sling Media's SlingBox hardware, which allows users to watch and record their home TV remotely from their computer or smartphone.
