BANGOR, Maine (AP) — The Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. is moving forward with plans to invest $8 million to update its electric grid with technology that will make it more efficient.
The utility says the Maine Public Utilities Commission recently approved its plans for "Smart Grid" technology.
The Bangor Daily News says the utility is planning to proceed with its plans even though it did not receive federal stimulus funds it had applied for.
Smart Grid technology uses digital technology and better communication to improve efficiency.
Bangor Hydro spokeswoman Susan Faloon says the utility didn't receive an explanation about why its stimulus application was denied.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
