ABI Research predicts that the number of smartphones protected by advanced security software will increase five-fold over the next five years. Future handsets will come with pre-loaded anti-virus software clients to prevent the loss of data and services to malware. In many cases, mobile banking and person-to-person payments will be authenticated by fingerprint sensors on the handset. The research firm also expects the mobile security market to exceed $4 billion by 2014.

Sprint Nextel has landed several new and renewed federal contracts valued at more than $500 million. The company has worked with federal agencies for more than 20 years. The contracts in today's announcement were with the Navy, the U.S. Postal Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

• Wireless network company TESSCO expects to deliver record earnings for the third quarter of fiscal 2010. The company said earnings per share will fall within the range of $0.52 to $0.57. The company also plans to continue its quarterly dividend program.

• Semiconductor company Skyworks Solutions says its power amplifier module is in Google's Nexus One. Skyworks' 3G solutions were incorporated in the Google platform as part of HTC's reference design.

SouthernLINC Wireless President and CEO Bob Dawson has been re-elected for the ninth consecutive year to the board of directors of CTIA. Dawson is serving a one-year term as a small carrier director for the wireless industry trade group for the 2010 fiscal year, which began Jan. 1.

• Mobile content provider Kyte has added Dan FitzSimons as chief revenue officer. FitzSimons will lead Kyte's overall domestic and international customer acquisition efforts. Prior to Kyte, FitzSimons held a number of senior sales leadership roles at major technology and technology services companies.

• The FCC has granted TerreStar Networks the authority to integrate terrestrial use of TerreStar's 20 MHz S Band spectrum into its next-generation mobile wireless network. TerreStar plans to use the authority to enhance coverage, capacity and throughput in its integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network for North American through conventional wireless devices. TerreStar plans to launch commercial service based on the ATC license later this year.

ACCESS CO, a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC markets, announced NetFront Browser v4.0, the latest version of NetFront Browser for mobile handsets and Internet-enabled devices. The company says the latest browser version performs JavaScript executions 20 times faster than ACCESS' NetFront Browser v3.5. The company is making a concept version of NetFront Browser v4.0 for Windows Mobile available for free download for a limited time.
