Dell is gearing up for a bigger push in the mobile device space, according to The Wall Street Journal. The new communications division will be headed by Ron Garriques, who joined Dell in 2007 after serving as president of Motorola.s Mobile Devices Division.

Rumors have swirled ever since Garriques. arrival that Dell would devote more effort to the mobile device space. Last month, the company confirmed plans to enter the smartphone business and announced partnerships with China Mobile and Claro in Brazil.

Dell is supplying the Mini 3 smartphone to China Mobile; it runs on China Mobile.s OPhone platform. Dell also said the initial Mini 3 phones are designed around the Android platform.

A company spokesman was unavailable to confirm the report before deadline. The Wall Street Journal reports the restructuring was announced internally on Friday.
