Lenovo Buys Back Handset Unit

Lenovo says it is buying back its handset division for $200 million just one year after selling the unit to private equity group Legend Holdings.

The deal aims to strengthen Lenovo's grip on China's rapidly expanding mobile Internet market, which is estimated by the company to exceed $16 billion by 2014 on the growth of 3G mobile broadband services. Lenovo Mobile has the third highest market share of China's mobile handset market and is the country's top-selling domestic brand.

In a statement, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said that the company viewed mobile Internet as a "key growth opportunity moving forward." "...we're confident in our ability to execute our mobile Internet strategy and make it our next growth engine after the China business," he added.

Lenovo, the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer, sold its handset unit after a 31 percent decline in shipments during the third quarter of its 2007/2008 fiscal year. Sales in the division had been representing an ever-shrinking proportion of Lenovo's sales, prompting the company to divest the unit for $100 million. The deal was announced Jan. 31, 2008.

The repurchase of the handset division is conditional upon shareholder approval. Lenovo did not provide a timeframe for when it expected the deal to close.

  • What is important to note is that China’s largest computer maker is stepping into the smartphone fray. The likelihood of Chinese cellular carriers giving the new Lenovo cell phone division a hand is great.
Unless Lenovo makes a huge error, we will probably see Lenovo’s beta units in the hands of Chinese carriers in 2010. In the beginning, China’s cellular carriers will not be selling the handsets but they will certainly make every effort to help Lenovo in the development of their handsets.
If I were companies like Apple, Nokia, LG, and Motorola, I would start worrying. I understand there are many who will doubt China's ability to launch a commercial handset in the United States. However, you know in 2000 there were still investment bankers who did not take China's financial strength seriously.
Don't count your chickens until they are hatched.

I was about as impressed with attempts to integrate mobile with this year's Super Bowl as I was with the Green Bay Packers’ effort during their NFC divisional playoff loss to the New York Giants.

The tech industry may have had its attention focused on gadgets this week due to the annual hullaballoo at the 2012 International CES show in Las Vegas, but at least a few people were thinking about the patented inventions that make those electronics work.
