Survey: Over Half of Teens Text While Driving

Sixty percent of teenagers admit to reading incoming text messages while driving, according to a study of teen driving habits conducted by Vlingo.

Teens are new, inexperienced drivers who tend to have a higher accident rate than that of older, more experienced drivers, and the survey suggests that teens are also at a heightened risk of distracted driving caused by text messaging.

However, teens are widely supportive of a ban on text messaging. Sixty-two percent of teens support making driving while texting illegal. If a hands-free solution is available, only 34 percent favor making texting while driving illegal. In addition, 90 percent of teens would use a hands-free technology to handle text and e-mail messages by voice.

"It is our responsibility to look into innovative solutions that embrace these consumer usage trends to make the roads safer," said Dave Grannan, CEO of Vlingo, in a statement. Vlingo specializes in voice-recognition technology for handsets.

The issue of texting while driving has come to national attention after a series of high-profile accidents were caused by the practice. The Senate is currently considering a bill that would require states to ban texting while driving or risk losing federal highway funds just weeks after a distracted driving summit hosted by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The Vlingo study was based on a survey of almost 5,000 U.S. residents over the age of 13, which was matched to U.S. Census proportions on gender, age and ethnicity. It also included about 100 respondents from each of the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

Respondents were screened for mobile phone ownership and usage. The survey was conducted by an independent research firm and has a statistical accuracy of +/- 1.41 percent.

  • We have teen drivers too and used to worry about them texting while driving until we signed up with PDA Lookout. Now we can track if text messages are sent while their GPS location is moving. We can find this out immediately and handle it any time it happens. Better safe than sorry! www.pdalookout.com They're awesome!

  • I think it’s about time the government intervenes. It’s just too dangerous. I text exclusively from my computer and avoid using a phone to text, especially when driving. I use www.smstextnow.com and it allows me to send text messages for free. A little safer then doing it while driving!!!

  • howsmyteendriving.org has a solution to these issues. For a small fee you get a bumper sticker with an 800 number just like the ones we see on commercial vehicles. Call is immediately placed to parents to react right then.

  • I recently came across a blog post in consumer reports about a new free mobile phone application to help combat distracted driving called DriveSafe.ly that reads your texts and emails to you while you are driving.

It looked pretty interesting so I tried it. I have a BlackBerry and it has really helped me when I’m on the road because it keeps me from texting while driving. It works through my Bluetooth and it can actually send an auto-response to the sender. I’ve had some fun with customizing the auto-response messages. I’m not that technical but it’s easy to use. I recommend people checking out www.DriveSafe.ly

  • It is not advisable to create a false sense of safety for a teen driver and that is what hands-free texting would be. Teens are nuerologically immature and should have 100% of their concentration on the road. Devise a means to prohibit teens from using the mobile phone altogether. I do not want to sound like a prude, but a vehicle is a loaded piece of artillery when it comes to teen driving. I think hands-free texting is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
