The standalone augmented reality browser Layar turned up today in Apple's App Store. Layar has been available in an Android version for some time now. The app allows users to overlay the physical world with a layer of digital information using the smartphone's camera.
Layar integrates specific layers of information, from location of restaurants and public transportation stations, to information from Twitter, Facebook and Yelp! For instance, by pointing their device's camera down a city street, users will see restaurant locations, or subway stations, superimposed over the "real" world.
The implications of a technology like Layar are still to be sorted out, but many believe the real world use cases of such a technology are full of possibility.
Layar 2.0 is now available in the App Store and the Android Market for free.
