T-Mobile USA expects to offer a follow-on device to the G1 early this summer.
The carrier said that to date, it has sold more than 1 million G1 handsets, buoyed by new software updates, such as Android 1.5, and new applications. About 4,900 applications are now available for download from the Android Market.
Google’s Android appears to be gaining momentum, even though many industry insiders expected far more models would have been released by now. A deluge of devices was expected at trade shows, like CTIA’s in April, but that didn’t transpire.
Earlier this week, Acer said it will deliver netbooks with the Android operating system instead of Windows from Microsoft.
In other device news, Nokia yesterday announced the highly anticipated Nokia N97 will begin selling this month in more than 75 countries. The Nokia N97 is the first device to ship with the Ovi Store.
The N97 also is Nokia's first device to feature a personalizable home screen, which can be customized with widgets. The widgets include key social networking destinations like Facebook and Hi5, news services like the Associated Press, Bloomberg and Reuters, as well as shopping and weather information.
So far, the device isn’t tied to a carrier in the United States, so it is expected to sell unsubsidized for about $699.
