MobiTV: 7M and Counting

MobiTV reports that more than 7 million subscribers are now tuned in to its mobile TV service.

The service is available on more than 350 handsets across 20 carrier networks, including Sprint, AT&T and Alltel in the United States.

In a statement, MobiTV Chairman and CEO Charlie Nooney says the company is about to hit the tipping point for mobile media – one that will move it from a novelty to the mainstream. MobiTV added 2 million new subscribers in less than six months.

MobiTV attributes the latest subscriber spike to intense interest in interactive mobile content, personified by its "tournament pass" application that brought March Madness to the iPhone in partnership with CBS Sports this spring. It captured top-seller status in the iTunes store, the company says.

No subscriber figures have been released for the Qualcomm MediaFLO-powered mobile TV services offered by Verizon Wireless and AT&T. MediaFLO representatives say they’re leaving that up to the carriers. Meanwhile, MediaFLO is gearing up for increasing its footprint nationwide with the conversion to digital TV.

Some would say it's about time, I'd be quicker to say all in good time, which has been Apple's mantra for quite a while.
