RIM Exec Seeks Hockey Team

In case you’re not watching the sports headlines, Research In Motion (RIM) co-CEO Jim Balsillie is embroiled in a bitter fight over the future of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team.

Balsillie wants to buy the team for $212.5 million and move it to southern Ontario, Canada. But the National Hockey League (NHL) doesn’t want that to happen.

A hearing is set for May 19 for arguments on who is in charge of the franchise and whether Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes had the authority to file for bankruptcy earlier this week, according to the Associated Press.

Balsillie twice before has tried and failed to purchase an NHL team and move it to Ontario; those deals involved the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Nashville Predators.

Earlier this week, the leader of the BlackBerry maker called on Canadian fans to demonstrate their support for bringing a seventh NHL franchise to Canada by logging onto www.makeitseven.ca.

Balsillie’s Wikipedia page ranks him as the ninth-richest person in Canada, with a net worth of $3.4 billion.
