• While mobile PCs and portable consumer electronic (CE) devices comprised the lion’s share of Wi-Fi chipset shipments in 2008, mobile handsets and stationary CE categories are driving the market growth, reports In-Stat. In 2008, Wi-Fi chipsets in mobile handsets grew by more than 51 percent. By 2010, In-Stat anticipates that this category will exceed 20 percent of the total Wi-Fi chipset market.
• NTT DoCoMo in Japan has signed a multiyear agreement to license Red Bend Software’s entire mobile software management (MSM) suite. The deal is the first time a company has licensed Red Bend’s entire MSM suite, which includes firmware over-the-air, managing software components over-the-air and device management. Separately, Red Bend said it has shipped its software in more than half a billion mobile devices worldwide.
• Mobile music and entertainment company mSpot announced a deal with CBS RADIO and Last.fm that will add over 100 live local radio stations across the United States and the Last.fm personalized radio service to mSpot’s mobile radio line-up.
• Glu Mobile announced the launch of Deer Hunter 3D for iPhone and iPod touch on the Apple App Store. Deer Hunter 3D is based on Atari’s Deer Hunter franchise.
• Proxim Wireless said that KPN Hotspots B.V., Holland's largest provider of Wi-Fi hot spots, is expanding its partnership with Proxim as the provider of its Wi-Fi networking equipment. KPN ordered more than 600 new access points from Proxim, adding to the more than 2,000 it already has deployed.
• Ericsson signed an eight-year contract with Faroese Telecom to build and deploy a W-CDMA/HSPA network for both the 2100 MHz and 900 MHz frequencies. The deployment will allow Faroese Telecom to deliver high-speed mobile broadband services to remote areas across the Faroe Islands and offshore platforms in the North Atlantic.
