Tapulous Tops ComScore Survey of Apple App Store

ComScore, a digital analytics firm, today reports that Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenge has the largest installed base among applications downloaded from the Apple App Store, with 32 percent of Apple App users having installed the game by February 2009.

“It’s impressive that a game like Tapulous’s Tap Tap Revenge can attract a higher penetration among Apple app users than apps for larger and more established brands,” said Brian Jurutka, vice president at comScore, in a press release.

The findings are the result of a comScore Apple App Store Report, which observes the cumulative installed base of applications downloaded via iTunes. The report is designed to enable digital marketers to understand the audience size, demographic profile and online behaviors of Apple app users.

The report also shows the top categories in which App Store users engaged. Retail, conversational entertainment (social networking) and entertainment took the top three category spots, respectively.

Recent announcements of high-profile mobile application stores, including Research In Motion’s new BlackBerry App World and Nokia’s Ovi Store, are all part of the scramble to grab market share in the burgeoning space of mobile applications.

“Tap Tap’s success demonstrates that there is ample opportunity in the app space for any publisher to obtain significant distribution with a product that engages users. Since the number of app users is growing nearly ten percent each month, that opportunity will only continue to grow for both existing and emerging app developers,” Jurutka stated.

The comScore report concluded with interesting demographic information regarding App Store users. For instance, App Store users are 32 percent more likely than average to belong to households earning at least $100,000 per year. The report concluded that this income segment represented 35 percent of all app users.

More than half (54 percent) of app users are in households making at least $75,000 per year.

App Store users were also at least three times more likely than average to visit several popular social/communication/entertainment sites, including: AOL Instant Messenger, Hulu, Twitter.com, Digg.com, iMeem and MTV.com.
