Alcatel-Lucent, a big winner in Verizon Wireless’ LTE contract awards, inked two agreements with China Mobile and China Telecom in the 3G arena.

The contracts, valued at $1.7 billion, call for the vendor to supply network upgrades, integration and maintenance services for the carriers, which were granted 3G licenses in January for TD-SCDMA (China Mobile) and CDMA/EV-DO (China Telecom) technologies.

The agreements were secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese flagship company.

Meanwhile, Chinese vendor ZTE reports its terminal shipments are going strong – especially in areas outside China. The company announced that 10 million terminal units shipped globally in the first quarter of 2009, representing an increase of 30 percent compared with the same period last year. Sixty-eight percent of ZTE’s terminal shipments in the first quarter of 2009 were to overseas markets.

ZTE terminal products include handsets, modems and other endpoint devices.

Quarterly CDMA handsets hit 2.5 million shipments globally, exceeding the total CDMA handset shipment volume in 2008, the company says. ZTE also says it provided more than 2 million data cards to the global market in the quarter.
