It’s official. President Barack Obama today announced his choice of Julius Genachowski as the next chairman of the FCC.

Genachowski’s appointment was widely expected and still needs to be confirmed by the Senate.

Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps issued a statement saying Genachowski has the knowledge, experience and dedication to lead the FCC forward as it tackles many challenges. “I look forward to the prospect of working with him on a communications agenda focused on serving consumers and the public interest.  He will find here a talented and energized team of public servants committed to precisely this goal.”

Genachowski was general counsel under former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt until leaving that post in 1996. He also was chairman of the Technology, Media and Telecommunications policy working group that created the Obama Technology and Innovation Plan.

The Wireless Communications Association International (WCAI) applauded the selection of Genachowski. His experience in public policy and business development is great news for the industry and users of wireless broadband services, WCAI President Fred Campbell said in a statement.

Industry insiders say they expect the new FCC to provide more transparency than the one headed by former Chairman Kevin Martin.
