MySpace today released a report card along with plans to roll out mobile advertising in the near future.
The MySpace BlackBerry application has had more than 2 million downloads to date. The company also reports that MySpace had more than 7 billion worldwide page views on mobile Web and applications combined in January and 20 million unique users worldwide on mobile Web and applications combined in January.
MySpace is working with carriers to preload the MySpace icon to the user’s device. This means that upon registration, the user will receive the MySpace icon. When the user clicks the icon, he or she will be prompted to download the application.
The report anticipates that half of all MySpace visits will come from a mobile device in the next few years.
As MySpace recently launched an Amazon-backed music store, the company stressed its continued emphasis on music, with further efforts to integrate the music experience, band profiles and band networking.
The report also states that ads can be placed on exit points of the application — after friend request acceptances and sent messages. The report went on to say that MySpace is also adding in the option for advertising support and is currently querying advertising partners who are interested.
“We are continuing to experiment with mobile advertising by experimenting with new ad units,” states the report. “We think monetizing our apps will be big so we’re putting the foundation in place to do this in the future.”
MySpace’s only true peer based on size, Facebook, currently reports a user base of 175 million on its Web site. Facebook boasts 3 billion minutes spent on Facebook each day worldwide and the average number of friends a user has is about 120.
