• The majority of mobile users would accept some form of mobile advertising as long as there are no hidden charges, they receive something in return and the level of intrusion is limited, according to a Strategy Analytics report.
• Shenandoah Telecommunications, an affiliate of Sprint Nextel, reported net income of $5.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2008, up from $1.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. PCS net subscriber additions tallied 5,685 in the quarter, bringing the total retail wireless customer base to 211,462 at the end of 2008. Churn was 1.9 percent.
• Onset Technology secured $3 million in a funding round led by the Cedar Fund. The company plans to bolster its research and development activity, expand its support of METAmessage Advanced Compliance Tool (ACT) for BlackBerry smartphones and introduce new versions of ACT for iPhone, Windows Mobile and Symbian devices.
• Thomas Bartlett will join American Tower as its new executive vice president and CFO. Jean Bua, who has been serving as the company’s CFO on an interim basis since last June, will assume the new position of executive vice president, finance and treasurer. Bartlett previously was at Verizon Communications, where he most recently served as senior vice president and controller. He was president and CEO of Bell Atlantic International Wireless from 1995-2000.

• Etihad Atheeb Telecom “GO,” a telecom operator in Saudi Arabia formed by an alliance of Atheeb Trading Company, Al-Nahla Trading Company, Batelco of Bahrain and Traco Company, has implemented Oracle Communications software to help meet its growth targets that include the deployment of residential WiMAX broadband services.
• Proxim Wireless says the Proxim Tsunami MP.11 HS (high security) line of base stations and subscriber units are the first point-to-multipoint wireless broadband products to be certified with Federal Information Processing Standards Publications (FIPS) 140-2 Level 2 validation. FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation is a requirement for any cryptographic product that will be used in a U.S. government agency network and meets the security requirements of healthcare organizations, financial institutions and other enterprises.
