• New forecasts by consulting firm Ovum show that users accessing the Internet via mobile broadband-enabled laptops and handsets will generate revenues of $137 billion globally in 2014, over 450 percent more than in 2008. But the firm says user growth will be far faster than revenue growth, meaning more users and more data traffic, but declining ARPUs for operators.
• BSQUARE announced it will port Adobe's Flash technology onto Google's Android platform for an unnamed global Tier 1 carrier.
• MyScreen appointed Nokia veteran Maurizio Angelone as CEO and a member of the board effective May 1. Angelone spent 15 years with Nokia in senior executive roles, including his most recent position as Global Account Head for one of Nokia's largest customers, Telefonica. Prior to that, he led Nokia's Latin American division.
• Mobile marketing company HipCricket has named Scott Debson as vice president of Brand Solutions. In a previous role, he was general manager and senior vice president, personalization, for mobile media company Zingy.
• The WiMAX Forum announced the addition of four new members to its Board of Directors: Ali Tabassi, senior vice president of global ecosystem and standards for Clearwire; Dave Williams, senior vice president of wireless technology at Comcast Cable; Thomas Lee, vice director of industry standards department for Huawei Technologies; and Bao-Shuh Paul Lin, vice president and general director of the Information and Communications Research Laboratories at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).
• NetMotion Wireless says its Mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution has been deployed by the Puget Sound Blood Center to provide its mobile clinicians with access to wireless data and applications as they move across Washington state, serving more than 185 hospitals and clinics.
• FusionOne announced a partnership with Glu for the company’s Handset Transfer Solution. With FusionOne’s Handset Transfer Solution, Glu subscribers can now seamlessly move licensed game content from one mobile device to another.
• Bytemobile has eployed its next-generation mobile Internet gateway solution for Cricket Communications. Bytemobile’s WebGate Service provides a centralized service control point within the network for data traffic and enables Cricket to intelligently control data flow while simplifying the delivery of new data services, according to Bytemobile.
• CNBC’s mobile Web site, which launched in June 2008, experienced monthly growth more than 10-fold from its first month, going from 2.7 million page views to more than 30 million in March 2009. The site attributes its success to exclusive content and accessibility.
• Skuku, an international communications company specializing in network-based telephony solutions, has launched its cellular roaming network technology in South Africa. The company launched the service in cooperation with its partner in the region, Circuit City Electronics, which will be responsible for the marketing and distribution of the product across South Africa.
