@CTIA: Handango Launches App Store Accelerator

LAS VEGAS—Handango, the mobile application and content provider, today announced its App Store Accelerator, a new smartphone application store service for carriers, device manufacturers, e-tailers and retailers looking to take advantage of the rapid growth of the smartphone application marketplace.

Handango said it created the App Store Accelerator service to take advantage of the increase in application store activity and offer its network of content developers the opportunity to capitalize on new markets and new channels.

The move by Handango could be seen as a way for the oldest unaffiliated retailer of mobile smartphone applications to get in on an increasingly fragmented market.

Everyone from Nokia to Samsung has announced plans to roll out new mobile application storefronts.

Research In Motion (RIM) is expected to announce the opening of its BlackBerry App World here at CTIA Wireless 2009 on Wednesday. Nokia is getting set to open its Ovi Store Front, and Microsoft recently released an SDK for its planned mobile app store, Sky Market. And of course, everyone is trying to catch up to the Apple App Store.

In the first half of 2008, Handango reported adding more than 370 developer partners to its roster of more than 23,000. Handango’s catalog now exceeds 140,000 apps.

Handango says the App Store Accelerator service is specifically tailored toward companies that are planning or already have invested in application delivery platforms and storefronts.

In the first half of 2008, Handango added more than 370 developer partners to its roster of more than 23,000. Handango’s catalog now exceeds 140,000 apps spanning numerous categories, including Entertainment, Games, Productivity, Business & Professional, Utilities, Travel, Health & Fitness and more.

Some would say it's about time, I'd be quicker to say all in good time, which has been Apple's mantra for quite a while.
