Telecom service providers in India added 15.4 million wireless subscribers in January, up from the 10.8 million added in December, reports the country's telecommunications regulator.
The world's fastest-growing telecommunications market now boasts a subscriber base of 362.3 million, reports the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. And there's plenty of room for growth: The country's teledensity, or number of wireline and wireless phone users per 100 people, reached 34.5 percent in January compared to 33.23 percent in December.
Bharti Airtel, which has the largest customer base of any telecom company in India, added 2.73 million users in January, bringing its subscriber base to 88.38 million from 85.65 million in December.
The country's second largest company, Reliance Communications, added 4.95 million users, bringing its subscriber base to 66.29 million.
Vodafone subsidiary Vodafone Essar added 2.4 million users in January. The company comes in slightly behind Reliance with a subscriber base of 63.3 million.
State-run rat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. came in fourth after adding 1.35 million subscribers, bringing its customer base to 47.58 million at the end of January.
Despite India's explosive wireless growth, its wireline services share the fate of fixed-lines all over the world. Wireline subscribers fell by 150,000, bringing the customer base to 37.75 million.
