• Sierra Wireless plans to cut 10 percent of its workforce, or about 56 jobs, reducing its labor costs by about $5.5 million on an annualized basis. The positions eliminated will impact all levels and functions of the company and are expected to be largely completed during the first quarter of this year.
• CommScope’s Andrew division says it is going indoors with its Invex.NxG wireless drive-test system, offering new equipment that makes designing and testing indoor wireless coverage systems easier. Network designers can use the i.Send transmitter to verify optimal antenna positioning for indoor distributed antenna systems (DAS) and as a low power source for testing the design and functionality of RF repeaters and base stations.
• Telular Corporation reported first-quarter net income of $117,000 on revenues of $10.8 million. The company achieved its 10th consecutive quarter of profitability from continuing operations.
• Based on preliminary data, NTELOS Holdings expects to report 2008 net income between $46 million and $48 million. The company added nearly 8,000 wireless net subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2008; total net adds for the year were 28,213. Churn was 3.2 percent for the fourth quarter of 2008.
• Multimedia networking solutions provider Starent Networks reported fourth-quarter net income of 2008 was $17.5 million compared with net income of $4.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2007.
• Freescale Semiconductor Holdings reported net sales for the fourth quarter of 2008 declined 33 percent from the third quarter of 2008 and 39 percent compared to the same period last year. During the third quarter of 2008, the company announced it was exploring strategic options for its cellular handset business and that it had ended its supply agreement with Motorola. The reported loss from operations for the three months ended Dec. 31 was $4.2 billion compared with a loss of $595 million in the fourth quarter of 2007.
