Sony will cut 5% of its 160,000 worldwide jobs by spring 2010, the Japanese electronics giant said today.

In addition to the 8,000 jobs, the company also will close some facilities and will outsource other jobs.  Sony’s goal is to save 100 billion yen ($1.07 billion) per year.

Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is unaffected by the latest round, a representative of the joint venture said, but lost half of its employees from Research Triangle Park, N.C., in September.

Sony is the third major high-tech company to make economic headlines in the past week. AT&T said Friday it is laying off 12,000 people, while Sprint yesterday was the focus of an analyst report predicting the loss of roughly 5,700 jobs.
