GSMA Takes on Embedded Modules

Networking equipment make Huawei gave its support to the GSM Association’s Embedded Mobile initiative, both parties announced today.

“The initiative endeavors to aid equipment suppliers to achieve greater economies of scale in order to bring down the prices of 3G modules that can be embedded in cars, cameras, health monitoring devices, environmental sensors, energy meters and many other machines,” the GSMA stated.

A priority of the group is the develop programming interfaces.  Other significant members include KTF, Rogers Wireless, Softbank, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telstra and Vodafone.

A similar organization is being considered in the U.S. by the CTIA under the banner of machine-to-machine communications.
