Nokia is teaming up with Nuance Communications to deliver mobile speech and predictive text capabilities across Nokia mobile devices. Nokia will use Nuance’s mobile input solutions to provide users a new mobile user interface.

“The overarching goal is to maximize the usability of the user interface, via text, speech, keystroke and various combinations of those inputs,” said Michael Thompson, Nuance’s vice president and general manager.

The two companies also plan to collaborate on an open integration framework for advanced input technologies to encourage innovation in the broader mobile developer ecosystem. According to Thompson, the goal is to involve both text and speech input, and open it up to third-party developers that will work jointly with Nokia and Nuance.

Nuance is not disclosing specifics of the multi-year agreement, but said the contract will be worth tens of millions of dollars over the next several years.

Earlier this week, T-Mobile USA announced that it was using Nuance’s Mobile Care software. The software helps end users fix problems and perform account management through a speech interface.
