Court Grants Stay in RIM/Visto Suit

In more news from RIM, a Texas federal court granted the BlackBerry maker’s request for a stay in a patent-infringement case filed by Visto. The suit had been scheduled to begin today in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

Visto filed its suit in 2006, alleging that RIM infringed on five of its patents related to wireless synchronization technology. It is asking for damages and a permanent injunction on all infringing RIM products.

RIM requested a stay on the suit in April, asking that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office re-examine all five of the disputed patents. The patent office originally invalidated two of the five patents, but has since reconsidered one of its rejections; Visto and RIM are waiting to hear about the other three patents.

Visto’s technology and products are currently licensed by Vodafone, T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel.
