Videocon in Talks with Motorola for Handset Division

Videocon Industries is officially in discussions to acquire Motorola’s handset business, according to a report from Press Trust of India.

Discussions between the companies began recently.  Videocon currently makes televisions and appliances, but it’s starting to buy spectrum licenses and has said it wants to gain 10% of the Indian market by 2013.  The company also wants to build phones for others, officials said.

Videocon first expressed its interest last month.  Motorola is already involved in the India market in partnership with Tata Teleservices.

Motorola announced its sale intentions in January due to declining sales and market share.  Other companies considered possible buyers for the Motorola division include Apple, Dell, Garmin, Google, Huawei Technology, Microsoft, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and ZTE, according to analyst firm iSuppli.
