Thanks to a partnership with Quattro Wireless, Skyhook Wireless, the company with the Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS), announced an upgrade to its software development kit (SDK) that includes location targeted advertising.
Now mobile application developers have a built-in revenue source, Skyhook said. When developers implement WPS location, they can immediately start generating revenue from location-based ads embedded in their mobile apps.
Naturally, developers are trying to figure out how to make money, and the process of working with carriers to persuade them to adopt an app can be time-consuming. But if they register in the Quattro/Skyhook system for devices with Wi-Fi, they can start getting revenue through the ad system, explained Ted Morgan, CEO and founder of Skyhook.
After developers register their application, Quattro’s system will grab appropriate location-based ads that fit the application’s profile. The program is geared for any mobile device that has Wi-Fi.
Quattro is always on the lookout for ways to increase its local reach, which means incorporating more sites or applications that have a location component to them, which is what advertisers are after, said Eswar Priyadarshan, chief technology officer at Quattro. The Skyhook deal represents Quattro’s first major one involving handsets with built-in Wi-Fi.
