Sybase Updates Mobile Access

Sybase today announced its new iAnywhere Mobile Office software, combining wireless e-mail, security and business application integration into one client.

The suite is entering beta testing and will ship this spring, officials of the Dublin, Calif., company said.

Sybase is using Web services and Microsoft.Net technology to allow Mobile Office to connect with any other standards-based business application.  Mobile Office also includes Sybase’s Afaria security software.  Afaria itself is now upgraded with a service pack for the 5.5 version.

The service pack helps mobile devices save battery power by only performing encryption/decryption on an application’s request, and by only working with changed data.  It uses features of the Windows Mobile 6 operation system that were not yet explored by Sybase when Microsoft announced the OS update last year.

The updated Afaria also will be available for Symbian phones later this year.

Sybase has plenty of competition for mobile security.  One player is Kaspersky Lab, which recently announced its Mobile Security 7.0 program in Europe.  That software will reach U.S. customers on March 31, officials of the Moscow company said.
