Cricket to Launch First AWS Market Next Week

Leap Wireless International, parent company of Cricket Communications announced that Cricket will launch its unlimited wireless services in Oklahoma City beginning April 8. Oklahoma City will be the first Cricket market to operate on the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum band.

“With the launch of Oklahoma City, we are entering what we believe to be another major growth phase for our business,” Doug Hutcheson, president and chief executive officer at Leap, said in a statement. “The AWS spectrum that we acquired in 2006 from the FCC enables us to again double the size of our Cricket footprint and covered POPs…Plus, we are launching with several new AWS handsets and a data device, which we believe will appeal to a wide variety of customers.”

Cricket rate plans range from $35 to $60 a month, and include unlimited anytime minutes, unlimited U.S. long distance, unlimited text and picture messaging, unlimited international text, unlimited Mobile Web, unlimited directory assistance and nationwide roaming minutes. Cricket Wireless Internet Service will also be available in Oklahoma City, allowing customers unlimited wireless Internet service for $40 a month with no contract, customers with Cricket mobile phone service receive a $5 discount per month.

Cricket is launching service in Oklahoma City with a variety of AWS wireless devices including the Samsung MyShot and Spex, UTStarcom 7126 handset and the UTStarcom UM100C wireless modem.
