News Briefs for July 15, 2008

WirelessWeek - July 15, 2008

• ECI Telecom has signed a 3-year framework agreement with Danish utilities company ELRO for the deployment of a nationwide WiMAX network across Denmark, beginning in the area of Randers. ELRO was granted a national WiMAX license in 2007, and the nationwide network rollout is expected to be completed by 2010. Joining ECI to build this WiMAX network are Alvarion and Ceragon Networks. The joint network will be managed under ECI's LightSoft Network Manager. No financial details were provided.

• Nortel has been selected to provide wireless communications with its GSM-R technology for two new railway lines in Algeria. GSM-R is expected to enable the Algerian railway infrastructure agency Agence Nationale d'Etudes et de Suivi de la Realisation des Investissements Ferroviaires (ANESRIF) to improve safety and increase average train speeds to reduce travel times while reducing operational costs. Nortel's technology also promises to help increase network interoperability and support new voice applications running over the GSM-R network such as railway emergency and group conference calls.

• Proteus, mobile marketing products and solutions provider, has rebranded to 2ergo, bringing it in line with its U.K.-based parent company as part of the group’s plans to scale the business globally. Officially becoming 2ergo Americas provides the former Proteus with greater access to the group’s products, resources and European reach.

Mobile messaging operator TynTec has been selected by TextMagic, the online SMS service provider, to power the company's messaging services.  Under the deal, TynTec will provide TextMagic with incoming and outgoing SMS messaging to underpin its online SMS communications service.

Five-year-old Skyhook Wireless, which provides hybrid positioning information, has announced its formal launch in Europe. The launch includes coverage expansion throughout the U.K. and Europe. The company also set up sales and operations offices in the area. Skyhook has mapped more than 16 million Wi-Fi access points in Europe and now provides coverage to over 130 million people in Europe.

• Freescale Semiconductor and Arada Systems have developed a production-ready reference design to speed and simplify the development of concurrent 802.11n access point devices. The solution supports advanced 802.11n features such as security, QoS and multiple SSID for both video and VoIP applications. The reference design uses Freescale’s MPC8377E-RDB platform to deliver more than 330 Mbps of TCP/IP throughput in the combined 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bands, while providing enough processing power to address other enterprise-class applications.
