Don’t ask me how we got to this point, but for anyone wondering what type of phone my husband got for his birthday, it’s a Nexus One.
Well, it wasn’t really a birthday present at this stage of the game since his birthday was in October, and to be honest, I didn’t buy it. Yesterday, he decided to pop for the unsubsidized version. (Hey, I was willing to fork over $200 for your usual smartphone but $529 is getting a little crazy in my opinion.)
Even though he wasn’t happy with his T-Mobile USA coverage, that’s most likely where he will stay, thanks possibly in part to the T-Mobile techie who called him back over the holidays in an effort to figure out what was going on with his phone at the time.
Once again, I’m not sure how we got to this point since for months we were unable to make a decision about which Android device and which carrier. Whatever. He’s a Google guy to the Nth degree, so probably the early reviews of the Nexus One helped despite the customer support issues. Some say it is the best Android device thus far, and since it runs the 2.1 software, that’s probably a reasonable conclusion. The HTC hardware looks good, too, based on the brief few seconds that I had to gaze upon it.
So far, he’s OK with the touch screen and, well, his early assessment is it’s “awesome.” It just arrived a few hours ago, and he hasn’t needed to call anyone for customer support just yet, although being a forgiving Google customer will probably go a long way toward alleviating any problems in that arena. He's already raved about how great it was to see Google techies participating in the forums.
As for me, I’m waiting for a chance to actually use the phone myself. It’s funny how things can change so quickly. One minute you’re in a Nexus-free household, the next minute your life is changed.
Not to be (too) snarky, but I spent about as much on a new laptop last year as he did on this Nexus One, and he uses that laptop nearly as much as I do. Yet when I wanted to try the Nexus, he said he needed to “charge it,” “program settings” and “make business calls.” Whatever. I know there will come a time when I can take a look at it. After all, he’s got to sleep sometime, right?
