BREW Conference Kicks Off
By Monica Alleven
WirelessWeek - May 29, 2008

SAN DIEGO—Kicking off Qualcomm’s annual BREW conference, Qualcomm and Adobe Systems yesterday announced the BREW platform will now support Adobe Flash technology.

It’s a significant move for developers. About 400 people attended one session yesterday devoted to Flash, and another session was scheduled for today, Andrew Gilbert, head of Qualcomm Internet Services (QIS), MediaFLO and Qualcomm Europe, told press and analysts at a reception last night.

The BREW Mobile Platform will be supported by development tools provided by both Qualcomm and Adobe, the companies said. Flash designers and developers can use Adobe's existing Flash development tools, including Adobe Flash CS3 Professional, Adobe Device Central CS3 and others in Adobe Creative Suite 3, to deploy rich Flash-based applications. Qualcomm and Adobe are working together to provide an increasingly streamlined developer workflow with subsequent releases of their respective tools, they said in a press release.

In other news, Qualcomm announced the latest addition to its line of Bluetooth solutions. The BTS4025 system-on-a-chip offers support for the latest Bluetooth 2.1 + Enhanced Data Rate specification, as well as better RF performance in a smaller, more power-efficient package, the company said.

Qualcomm also entered into a license agreement with Kirusa, a vendor of voice SMS services, to customize and integrate Qualcomm’s Short Voice Service client technology into Kirusa’s Voice SMS platform for distribution to wireless operators, device makers and OEMs worldwide.

Here are a few more BREW-related news items:

  • JuiceCaster unveiled location-based geotagging, developed initially for BREW. With geotagging, JuiceCaster can send pictures and videos that automatically include location for various social-networking platforms, including MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Zed, formerly 9 Squared, announced that more than 76 million downloads have been delivered to U.S. consumers through its family of BREW applications since 2001. Zed also noted several milestones for itself in the last year, including the launch of three BREW applications and the continued broadening of its flagship offering, RealTone JukeBox.
  • mSpot announced the availability of mSpot Make-UR-Tones, a customizable ringtone application developed for BREW. As BREW operators add Make-UR-Tones to their product offerings, more consumers will be able to use their mobile phones to create unique ringtones from full tracks.
