Proxim Intros New Backhaul Products

By Monica Alleven

Proxim Wireless is jumping head first into the 4G backhaul space, introducing two new product lines: the Tsunami QB-8100 point-to-point and the Tsunami MP-8100 point-to-multipoint.

The company says both products exceed the International Telecommunication Union’s performance requirement for 4G, delivering 300 Mbps data rates, with later versions expected to deliver 600 Mbps data rates. Both product lines are certified for deployment in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The new Tsunami product family combines MIMO and OFDM technologies with Proxim’s Wireless Outdoor Routing Protocol (WORP) to provide backhaul for carriers, WISPs and government entities.

Proxim’s list of wireless carrier customers reads like a who’s who: Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile. Proxim has been delivering wireless solutions to carriers for nearly 20 years, according to Proxim President and CEO Pankaj Manglik.

In the government sector, Proxim’s products are used in wireless video surveillance of traffic, such as at major stoplight intersections, and on bridges.

Manglik acknowledges the economy has had an impact on Proxim’s business, but it used the situation as an opportunity to focus on R&D. “You want to have products that nobody else has when things turn around,” he says. Proxim also expects to benefit as an equipment provider from the broadband stimulus funding that service providers are anticipating.

List pricing for the Proxim Tsunami QB-8100 products begins at $6,599 and list pricing for the Tsunami MP-8100 products begins at $1,549.
