AT&T, Nokia Launch Surge

Loading...

AT&T and Nokia are living up to a couple of their promises with the launch today of the Nokia Surge, dubbed a “socially supercharged” smartphone, for social networking at a modest price.

"Socially Supercharged" Smartphone: Nokia SurgeThe companies say the Nokia Surge is designed for consumers who like to stay connected whether using IM, text or e-mail, multimedia messaging, AT&T Video Share, or updating and connecting via their favorite social networks.

Earlier this year, AT&T kicked off an ad campaign highlighting its smartphone offerings. In March, the carrier announced smartphones that then expanded its line-up to seven.

For its part, Nokia has been promising to beef up its North American presence by working closely with carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

“Together with AT&T, we’re excited to address the increasing demand for smartphones with a device that’s as attractive to the customer as it is to his or her wallet,” said David Petts, vice president and general manager of the AT&T account for Nokia, in a press release.

The Symbian S60-based Surge includes Flash support to view most sites in full HTML or to watch YouTube videos. It also comes with a pre-installed JuiceCaster application so users can post messages, images, videos and comments to Web sites like Facebook. Other features include a 2-megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator and AT&T Mobile Music.

The phone sells for $79.99 with a two-year contract and after a mail-in rebate. It will be available online and in AT&T stores on July 19.
