Even as the major carriers slowly come around to the possibility of open access requirements on the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction, CTIA released a statement affirming its strong opposition to any "encumbrances" being placed on the airwaves.
Following testimony by John Kneuer, assistant secretary for communications and information at the Commerce Department, at the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee meeting, CTIA reiterated its position, "We agree…that adding any encumbrances to the auction will lead to lower revenues. In contrast, an auction with flexible service rules will create the best environment for maximum consumer benefits and revenue to the U.S. Treasury. Any interested entity is welcome to win spectrum in a fair and competitive auction and adopt whatever business model they choose."
The FCC is expected to announce rules for the upcoming auction some time next week.
