TracFone Wireless is putting a new spin on prepaid wireless. The company launched NET10, a national prepaid service that offers a flat rate of 10 cents per minute for local, long distance and roaming calls.

The company says that unlike other prepaid wireless service providers, the balance of airtime is stored directly on the handset using proprietary technology, giving users "complete control" of their spending.

"Many wireless providers claim to charge only 10 cents per minute, but there are usually many hidden costs, contracts or daily access fees," Derek Hewitt, senior vice president in charge of marketing the new NET10 product line, said via a press release. "This is simply not the case with NET10 - it's a hassle-free and honest service that is without rival in the industry."

Customer service agents are not required for activation or airtime transactions, which can be done directly from the handset or on the Internet. NET10 minutes carry over with active service, and text messaging is 5 cents per message, the company says.
