AT&T Increases Data Speeds
By Teresa von Fuchs
WirelessWeek - June 04, 2008

AT&T says that it’s seen a speed increase on its 3G network of up to 20% faster downlink speeds and 50% for uplink speeds. The company says the faster network is the result of recent network enhancements, including the deployment of HSUPA technology, which it plans to deploy across all existing 3G markets before the end of June.

AT&T's 3G network is available in more than 275 major U.S. metropolitan areas. By the end of June, the carrier says its network speeds will be between 700 Kbps and 1.7 Mbps on the downlink and between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps for uplink.

AT&T also said that the number of AT&T LaptopConnect subscribers increased more than 83% between the first quarters of 2007 and 2008, showing strong demand for on-the-go data use.

The company also announced availability of managed security services that it says will help businesses better protect their data. AT&T Encryption Services, the most recent addition to AT&T's enterprise security portfolio, is focused on the protection of information by providing encryption services and management of digital signatures "in the cloud."

Some features of AT&T Encryption Services include: e-mail confidentiality to help prevent unauthorized parties from accessing critical messages and attachments, authentication of the e-mail sender, a validation of the integrity of the e-mail message and its contents that ensures the recipient that the message was not modified.
