Proxim Introduces 802.11n Access Points
By Monica Alleven
WirelessWeek - November 17, 2008

Proxim Wireless announced the availability of what it calls the industry’s first 802.11n solution to achieve 320 Mbps of throughput on a dual-radio solution.

With Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 802.11n access points, organizations can achieve higher performance than their existing wired and WLANs while avoiding the costly controller upgrades, deployment challenges and additional network planning that have deterred enterprises from upgrading to 802.11n, according to Proxim.

With the new access points, Proxim executives believe they’re raising the bar in the market but lowering the bar with respect to the price point, said Geoff Smith, vice president of products and marketing. To make it easier for end-users, Proxim designed the access points to use the same ceiling mount bracket as earlier versions, for example.

So far, enterprises have expressed interest in moving to 802.11n, but only a small percentage has actually deployed it, so Proxim tried to identify and address barriers to entry.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 (dual-radio) and AP-800 (single-radio) are available immediately for $1,099 and $799, respectively.
