Nokia Debuts N97 and Philips Partnership
By Wireless Week Staff
WirelessWeek - January 08, 2009

Nokia announced a variety of new cell phones this week, timed for the Consumer Electronics Show.

Devices include a smartphone dubbed the N97, which has a horizontal keyword similar to the Nokia 9000 series but is closer in size to a common phone, along with North American versions of the models 1006 for AWS networks, 7510 for T-Mobile USA and E63 with a BlackBerry-esque design.

Nokia also said its Nokia.mobi site will be a default bookmark in all of its new phones.  In addition, the dominant handset company said it’s working with Philips to develop home electronics using the Digital Living Network Alliance protocol.

Separately, according to InformationWeek, Nokia is discontinuing the N810 WiMAX tablet. “The Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition has reached the expected end of its life cycle. We will continue to follow the WiMax network development and new product decisions will be considered based on the evolution of the business,” Nokia told the IT magazine.

The 810 was announced in April last year. Clearwire opened its first mainstream WiMAX service yesterday, making the timing of Nokia’s decision unusual.
